In this discussion-based lesson, students will analyze how power dynamics shift after marriage. The focus is on articulating personal needs, managing expectations, and using diplomatic language to handle conflict with extended family. Students will practice "assertive communication" techniques, specifically focusing on how to maintain a "united front" with a spouse while remaining respectful to in-laws.

3: If you were expected to attend a mandatory family dinner every single Sunday, would you view it as a source of support or a restriction of your freedom?

1: Why is it considered essential in Western culture for a couple to act as a single unit when dealing with extended family? What are the consequences of failing to do this?

2: At what point does honoring family traditions become an infringement on a couple’s autonomy?

3: How can a person communicate that they need more space from their in-laws without causing offense or hurt feelings?

4: How do you think the expectations for "caring for aging in-laws" will change for our generation compared to our parents'?

5: If an in-law gives unsolicited advice about your child-rearing or finances, what is the most diplomatic way to "set a boundary" without being disrespectful?
